The Secret Garden Cafe Behind Whitefriargate

Tucked down an unmarked alley, this courtyard cafe is Hull's worst-kept secret — and our new favourite.

Whitefriargate is changing quickly, but the best discoveries are still the ones you almost miss. Tucked behind an unshowy doorway, this courtyard cafe has become a quiet bolt-hole for people who want good coffee without the city-centre rush.

The room is small, bright and full of plants, with a short menu built around toasties, cakes and carefully made espresso. Regulars come for the calm as much as the coffee: freelancers with laptops in the morning, shoppers ducking in at lunch, and friends stretching one flat white into an hour-long catch-up.

Owner Maya Patel spent two years bringing the Georgian outbuilding back to life. The result feels personal rather than polished, and that is exactly why it works.
